Wolfson College, Cambridge - Post Graduate Study Centre and Student Residence

Wolfson College is one of the many Colleges in the University of Cambridge. It is a leading academic research institute with postgraduate students attaending from throughout the world. The majority of the students are carrying out research towards postgraduate degrees; in particular PhDs and MPhils.
Project Description:
Works on this high quality student residence and study centre building comprised:
- 45 undergraduate en-suite student rooms with kitchen facilities
- Seminar and conference rooms
- Basement storage area
- External cladding with artificial stone and masonry
- High quality internal finishes to seminar and associated circulation areas
- Site adjacent to other Wolfson College residence buildings of moderate sensitivity
- En-suite bathroom pods used to assist programme and economy (all bedrooms were identical)
This project was procured a using two stage, develop and construct tender process.
Sustainability:
- Silent driven, steel sheet piled, hydro barrier basement walls were used to reduce the programme time, produce an economic basement construction and to comply with noise sensitivity issues.
- Use of Pre-fabricated Bathroom Pods
Key Challenges:
- Restricted site next to existing "live" student residence building
- Accommodating Client need to restrict noisy activity at College examination times
