Services: Cost Consultancy

Willowbrook Hospice provides services to the St Helens and Knowsley areas, and like many charitable hospices the demand for their services outgrew their current building capacity. As an example, prior to expansion Willowbrook Hospice used two converted bedrooms as consulting rooms, so by expanding they reclaimed these two single rooms as bedrooms, giving patients improved privacy during their care.

Project Description:

The Hospice was awarded a grant of £604,000 from the Dept of Health towards the cost of the build, with the remaining funds raised through a variety of fund raising activities and donations.

The scope of works comprises the new construction of a 2166 sq ft outpatients' annexe together with associated external works along with alterations within the existing hospice structure.

Sustainability:

  • Underfloor heating powered by an air-source heat pump
  • Use of natural light and ventilation maximised by the incorporation of rooflights and windcatchers
  • Rainwater harvesting

Key Challenges:

  • Strict cost control due to funding from charitable donations
  • Works undertaken within an environment sensitive to the needs of the hospice residents

Form of Contract: JCT Standard Building Contract with Quantities 2005
