Harvey Court, Student Accommodation Refurbishment

Services: Cost Consultancy

Gonville and Caius is a College in the University of Cambridge. The College is home to 500 undergraduates, 250 graduates and 110 senior academic members. Based around three beautiful courts in the centre of Cambridge, the College is known for its excellence in teaching and research.

Project Description:

The works comprise the alteration and refurbishment of the Grade 2* listed Harvey Court Student Residence, originally designed by Sir Leslie Martin and a good example of mid-20th century architecture. The building has a 'Ziggurat' style which results in a very complex building form, especially where refurbishment and improvement works are desired. The Client's key requirements for the project include:

  • Improving student facilities by providing 100nr student rooms with en-suite facilities.
  • Reconfiguration of the ground floor and improving the appearance of the Junior Common Room to make it more usable for conferences
  • Strip out and re-installing of mechanical and electrical services throughout the building
  • General repairs and improvements to the existing building structure.  This included the eradication of leaks to the building's waterproofing, which suffered for many years despite attempts at repair.

Key Challenges:

  • Identifying and managing risks to the integrity of the building structure through investigative works
  • Close collaboration with outside parties in relation to the design and conservation of this listed building.
  • Site restrictions posed by access issues and University buildings in close proximity.

Form of Contract: JCT2005 Standard Building Contract without Quantities Revision 2 2009 with Schedule of Amendments.
