Cinema & TV Benevolent Fund

Services: Cost Consultancy, Employer's Agent

The Cinema and Television Benevolent Fund (CTBF) is the leading UK charity for people working behind the scenes in the film, cinema and television industries, whose careers cover all aspects of pre-production and beyond. The CTBF has been offering practical and financial assistance to those who have worked in a paid position within the industry in the UK for at least two years and who have been affected by illness, bereavement, accident or unemployment.

Glebelands, in Wokingham, East Berkshire, is the Cinema and Television Benevolent Fund's own retirement Village, set in and around a grade two listed country house, sited in eight acres of beautiful grounds.

Project Description:

The CTBF's redevelopment of the Glebelands estate currently comprises two major phases of work, where Henry Riley have been a key consultant on both.

Phase 1 involved the construction of a new cloister building attached to the existing listed house, providing 27 one and two bedroom apartments and communal facilities to an Extra Care standard. The design of this new wing had to be sensitive to the existing house and the construction work carried out directly adjacent to the home, which remained in full occupation.

Phase 2 involved the comprehensive refurbishment and internal alteration of the listed Victorian house to provide 35 en-suite bedrooms and extensive communal facilities to enable its operation as a nursing home. The existing residents were temporarily decanted to the new building for the duration of the works, but to accommodate their special needs, temporary catering kitchens & dining facilities were also provided.

Both phases of work were successfully completed, including maintaining access to and allowing the continued operation of the estate throughout the whole duration of the works.

Key Challenges:

  • Dealing with a listed building
  • Phasing the 2 sections while maintaining througout occupation including providing some temporary installations such as a field kitchen while the permanent kitchen was rebuilt.

Phase 1 Form of Contract: JCT Design & Build
