Services: Employer's Agent

ASDA is a British supermarket chain offering an excellent mix of fresh food, grocery, clothing, home, leisure and entertainment goods.  They have over 170,000 dedicated ASDA colleagues in more than 500 stores, 23 depots and 8 recycling centres across the country.

Project Description:

ASDA has made firm commitments to maximise its opportunities to reduce carbon emissions and improve energy efficiency in a sustained way, in both existing and new stores.  Henry Riley has worked on several Asda schemes with sustainability initiatives, including the new 40,000 sq ft low carbon superstore in Bootle, which has the following sustainability initiatives:

  • Ground source heat pumps
  • Timber frame and cladding
  • Sun pipes
  • Biomass boiler
  • Efficient glass-fronted fridges
  • Sedum "Green" roof.

This was the first of ASDA's new stores to target significant reductions in carbon production and energy consumption, along with the use of materials from sustainable sources.

As part of the development, ASDA also improved the railway underpass and footpath to Capricorn Way.

Key Challenges:

  • Asda's first full 'Eco Store'
  • BREAAM- 'Excellent rating'
  • Inherent issues in combining eco technology
